HRM offer halts road blockade

Even though their main concern has been met, some residents of North Preston are hesitant to call the closing of a private road that gave a handful of residents a short cut from a nearby detour a victory.

Mayor Peter Kelly and area Coun. David Hendsbee announced yesterday 10 households will no longer have access to a padlocked back road which allowed them to bypass construction on Lake Major Road.

Residents of North Preston, a predominantly black community, were outraged when a handful of the Lake Major residents, who were white, were given access to the road, which reduced their detour by half.

Protesters alleged racism and blockaded Lake Major Road at Main Street in Westphal in protest since Monday. Around noontime yesterday, the protesters agreed to disperse after accepting the terms offered by HRM.
