HST goes into effect on Canada Day

Starting Canada Day, residents of Ontario and British Columbia will start paying HST on services and goods previously exempted from provincial sales taxes.

At Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral and Cremation Services, Ottawans have been rushing to pre-plan services before July 1 to avoid the eight per cent increase the harmonized sales tax will mean, said COO Patrick McGarry.

Prices will also go up at Glebe Fitness, but owner Freddy Martinez doesn’t expect people will be deterred.

“Ultimately, they’re still going to pay,” he said.
