Huskies fall to Axemen in upset

The Acadia Axemen flipped Atlantic University Sport football upside down Saturday and the Saint Mary’s Huskies are on the bottom looking up.

The Axemen, who won just three games in the past two years, earned their first victory over the Huskies since 2006 with a 17-7 upset in Wolfville.

“We didn’t play with any type of fire,” said Huskies head coach Steve Sumarah.

“Defensively, we did a pretty good job … But offensively, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot.”

The Huskies trailed 10-7 late in the fourth quarter but Jack Creighton was intercepted at 3:06 and Axemen quarterback Kyle Graves delivered a 16-yard pass to Dartmouth’s Stu Clow, who hauled in his second touchdown of the day.

Brett Lauther accounted for most of the Saint Mary’s offence with a pair of field goals.

“You can’t make any assumptions and I think our guys made assumptions they were going to win the game,” Sumarah said.
