Huskies no strangers to underdog role vs. Laval

The Saint Mary’s Huskies lost a game many thought they’d win last week. This week, they’re hoping to win a game many think they’ll lose.

The Huskies, who suffered an opening-week road loss to Acadia, host the powerhouse and nationally top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“I guess that’s why we play the games,” said Huskies all-star tailback Devon Jones.

“Everyone’s going to say, ‘They don’t have a chance.’ Good. That will fuel our fire. We’re ready for them to come in.”

The Huskies are looking to avoid just their second 0-2 start in the past 15 seasons.

While they are obvious underdogs, they were also underdogs in the 2007 Uteck Bowl and ended up ousting the Rouge et Or in a surprising 24-2 triumph.

“Last time they were on this field, I’m sure (Laval) coach (Glen) Constantin knows the outcome,” Jones said.

“We’re not guaranteeing anything, but we’re going to come out much more prepared than we were last week.”
