I wish it happened to me, says dad of boy, 5, hit by lightning

TORONTO – The father of a five-year-old boy hit by lightning in a Brampton, Ont., park says he wishes he had been hit instead.

Oral Caines says his son, Kyus Caines, has been drifting in and out of consciousness and is in critical condition at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Caines says it’s tough to see his son so seriously injured and wishes he could take his place.

Kyus Caines’ mother, Dulce Caines, 26, was sent to hospital by the lightning strike Wednesday afternoon as well and is in hospital in Brampton, Ont., where she is in fair but stable condition.

Another boy, a three-year-old playmate of Kyus Caines, was also hit and his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.

The three were in a park northwest of Toronto on Wednesday afternoon, under what witnesses described as cloudy but not ominous skies, when they were struck by lightning.
