IceCaps end Sound Tigers’ winning streak

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Carl Klingberg scored the shootout winner and the St. John’s IceCaps beat Bridgeport 4-3 in American Hockey League action Wednesday, ending the Sound Tigers’ eight-game winning streak.

Jason DeSantis had a goal and an assist in regulation for St. John’s (25-11-6), while Paul Postma and Shawn Weller also scored.

The IceCaps have gone to overtime or a shootout in four of their last five games.

Eddie Pasquale made 29 saves for St. John’s.

The win came at a cost for St. John’s, as DeSantis and fellow defenceman Derek Meech both left the game and did not return.

Meech was hit early in the game and hobbled off, while DeSantis was hit from behind late in the second and stayed down for several moments before skating off on his own power.

The status of both players is unknown.

Rookie Casey Cizikas had two goals and an assist for Bridgeport (20-17-5), while Matt Donovan also scored. Kevin Poulin made 26 saves.

Cizikas scored opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 10:46 of the first period. Cizikas, named as a replacement for the AHL Eastern Conference all-star team on Tuesday, centred the puck off IceCaps’ defenceman Postma’s skate and into the back of the net.

The IceCaps tied it late in the period on a power play, when DeSantis’s shot from the point was redirected by Weller for his seventh goal of the season.

St. John’s took a 2-1 lead at 2:44 of the second period with another power play goal. DeSantis picked up his seventh goal of the season, one-timing a pass and blowing a shot past Poulin.

The IceCaps pulled ahead 3-1 early in the third as the power play struck for the third time in the game. Postma wound up and rifled a shot past Poulin for his seventh of the season just 1:59 into the period.

The lead did not last long. The Sound Tigers pulled to within one minutes later when Donovan snapped a shot that beat Pasquale high to the blocker side.

Cizikas completed the comeback at 11:44 of the third after burying a loose puck past Pasquale.
