Shocker. That’s the only way to explain last night’s episode of American Idol that saw Michael Johns eliminated.
What a mistake. Are people voting based on talent, or is it purely a popularity contest? Johns was one of the best this week. This just wasn’t the time for him to go. He’s got charisma, star power and a great voice. It’s a shame to see such talent let go so quickly.
This week’s bottom three were Johns, Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado. When host Ryan Seacrest announced that both the girls were safe, silence fell upon the studio as everyone watching let what had just happened to register.
It was a huge shock. It was Johns’ first time in the bottom three and with the least number of votes out of the 31 million cast, it was John’s turn to say goodbye.
“You got to keep on rocking brother … you’ve got a future ahead of you,” said judge Randy Jackson.
Both Smithson and Mercado weren’t at their best this week, and neither was David Cook. But the voters want what they want. And they obviously didn’t want Johns to be crowned American Idol.
“I’m definitely surprised, I enjoyed singing that song. It was a song about dreams. If there’s a song to go out on, it’s that one,” said Johns, before singing one last time with Aerosmith’s Dream On.
Earlier on in the show, the Top 8 put on a group number singing Shout To The Lord, which they sang the night before during the Idol Gives Back special.
Last year’s winner Jordin Sparks and R&B singer Chris Brown also made a special appearance, singing their hit song No Air.
