Idol voters pull surprise

It would be interesting to know or to at least try to understand how the American public places their votes when it comes to this singing competition.

Once again it’s a bit of a surprise that they would decide to eliminate Kristy Lee Cook during last night’s episode of American Idol.

Cook has been the most improved since the day she first auditioned in Philadelphia. She’s been consistent, and has used the judges’ advice wisely. Her song choice has been smart and though she hasn’t nailed every performance, Cook has demonstrated that she wants to build a long-lasting career in this unpredictable business.

A season high of almost 36 million votes came flooding in this week, but not enough to save Cook. It just goes to show that anything can happen on this show.

Before the results were read, the competitors continued with the Mariah Carey theme singing One Sweet Day — a hit for Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. Elliot Yamin, who placed third on the fifth season of American Idol, sang his song Free followed by Carey herself who performed her new hit single Bye Bye.

The hopefuls were then split one by one into two groups: Jason Castro, Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado made up one group, while David Cook, Kristy Lee Cook and Brooke White comprised of the other.

That left David Archuleta. Though he was the last one called on stage, he was the first announced as safe. Host Ryan Seacrest then asked (David) Cook to switch places with Mercado, and asked Archuleta to move next to the group he thought was safe. Talk about confusing.

Like past Idols before him, when asked this difficult, rather pointless question, Archuleta decided to stay put and actually sat in the middle of the stage.

So this week’s bottom three was made up of three women: Mercado, Cook and White. All of who have been in this position more than once.

Unfortunately, it was Cook who won’t be coming back next week to be mentored by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Weber.

“Thank you America for voting for me because this was a huge dream and it wouldn’t have come true if it weren’t for all of you fans,” said Cook.
