Local teens are turning their struggles into art and showcasing it at the By Youth for Youth Multi Arts Festival fundraiser on Friday at the iHuman Youth Society.
All live original music, spoken-word pieces and visual art are the creations of teens from the centre.
The idea for the event was conceived by iHuman youth James Magee, who rounded up performers and designed the posters promoting the event.
“The actual visual and musical forms are going to be up to the kids when they hit the stage,” said Rainer Bronner, volunteer event mentor. “So it might be a lot of rap and hip hop, or we might be surprised.”
The proceeds from the event will go to help fund a CD compilation of music created, written and performed by iHuman youth, as well as other project ideas.
“If you see something positive happening, created entirely by youth at risk, then it is well worth the entire community supporting,” Bronner said.
“Ultimately, youth at risk that stay immersed in things that aren’t positive for the community end up affecting the community in that way.”
This all-ages event was sponsored by the SIRENS Charity for youth at risk, Radio Enigma, Sunshine Treeshade humanitarian charity and Raindance Rubberboots socially conscious artists’ team.
Tickets are $6 and the event begins at 6:30 p.m.
