Improv milestone

Drew Carey star Ryan Stiles, left, is a surprise addition to the Urban Improv Ten Year lineup, much to the delight of actor Roman Danylo..

Comedians Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles were best friends long before they landed their star-making roles on the Drew Carey Show.

Their 20-year friendship goes way back to the days when both were struggling actors here in Vancouver doing improv comedy.

Last week, this dynamic duo paid homage to their adopted hometown with a special appearance at Ten Years of Urban Improv at Kitsilano’s Chivana restaurant.

Organizer/actor Roman Danylo and friends were extra-pleased to find that Stiles, who was not scheduled to appear, heard about the show through his mom and drove up from the U.S. as an added surprise guest.

Meanwhile, Vancouver’s Four Seasons Hotel unveiled its new Yew Restaurant + Bar. This place gives Zen a whole new kind of zip with a raw bar, panini bar and 150 wines by the glass. It’s also home to one of my favourite brunches of all time — La Boqueria — a Latin-inspired, handcrafted masterpiece featuring exotic meats, jellies, jams and a fresh egg/omelet cookery to die for. Try it — “yew’ll” love it.

Restaurant chef Stephen Clark serves up scrumptuous samples and seafood at the opening of Yew.

CTV-9 Olympic reporter Mike Killeen and wife Jill are among the VIPs at the opening of Yew.

Food stylist Nathan Fong escorts friend Jean-Francois Jutras to the opening of Yew.

Award-winning improv actress Diana Frances is thrilled to share the stage with alumnus Colin Mochrie who now hosts Are You Smarter Than A Canadian 5th Grader?

No wimps here as Toby Berner, left, and Drew McCreadie boldly take on audience challenges at Ten Years of Urban Improv.

No, you haven’t had too much to drink. There really are mermaids on the bar at the opening of Yew.

Four Seasons GM Guy Rigby looks red hot between Holt Renfrew models Stephanie Twarog, left, and Tiara Sorensen.

Global TV news anchor Chris Gailus and wife Jane get a chance to sip and sample at the opening of Yew.

Holt Renfrew models Britta Bentz, left, and Megan Kaptein cuddle up to Four Seasons Executive Chef Rafael Gonzalez at the opening of Yew.
