Don’t judge a play by its title. The Tony-Award winning play, Urinetown, is the latest production for Ottawa’s Sock n’ Buskin theatre company.
The play takes place after decades of drought have led to catastrophic water shortages, and private toilets have been outlawed. Urine Good Company (U.G.C), a menacing corporation run by Caldwel V Cladwel, controls the water supply by offering fee-to-pee amenities.
The worst of these facilities, Public Amenity #9, is run by gatekeeper Penelope Pennywise.
The town suffers under the tyranny of the U.G.C, until the hero Bobby Strong leads them in a pee-for-free revolution.
Urinetown is a political cautionary tale that is laugh-out-loud funny.
The characters are archetypes that move the plot along with their own brand of self-mocking.
The entire play is a parody of the musical genre, so theatre buffs and first-timers alike can relate to the show.
The play will run from March 24-27, at 8 p.m. in the Kailash Mital Theatre.
