Increase food regulation: Poll

Canadians are distrustful of food companies inspecting their own meat and want the federal government to take more responsibility for food safety, a national poll has found.

Seven in 10 Canadians believe Ottawa should be more hands-on in the safeguarding of food products, says the Nanos Research survey commissioned by the agriculture union that represents federal meat inspectors.

The poll asked 1,001 Canadians to gauge their faith in the country’s meat inspection system following last summer’s listeria outbreak that killed 22 people and sickened hundreds of others — perhaps thousands. The poll results show Canadians overwhelmingly reject the idea of industry self-regulation.
