Inferno at tire business lights up night sky

BRANDON, Man. – Firefighters are watching for hotspots after crews spent several hours battling a blaze that destroyed a tire shop in Brandon, Man.

The inferno at Sturgeon Tire in the city’s central area sent flames and thick smoke shooting high into the air after the alarm sounded late Monday afternoon.

No one was hurt.

Gary Bell, Brandon’s deputy fire chief, says nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution, but the burning tires and chemicals didn’t pose a threat to the area.

Electricity to several hundred Manitoba Hydro customers was disrupted for a brief period when a power pole near the burning building also caught fire.

The cause of the blaze and the damage estimate are not known. (CKLQ)
