Engine
Power came from a 3.5-litre V-6 or a 4.5-litre V-8 — hence the “35” or “45” in the vehicle’s name. Output from the V-6 was rated between 275 and 297 horsepower, while the V-8 generated between 325 and 335, depending on the year. Automatic transmissions were standard, and AWD was available.

Owners typically rave about an exceptional interior, high comfort levels, performance, and a great-sounding engine. A high relative value factor and a long list of high-tech toys round out the positives.
What owners dislike
Owner complaints typically centre around fuel mileage, a “fussy” Bluetooth interface, road noise and a stiff ride on some models.
Common issues
Double check for proper operation of all electronic toys — including the navigation system, Bluetooth interface, stereo system and intelligent key. If a xenon headlamp is burnt out, negotiate to have it replaced before purchase, as they aren’t cheap.
Some owners have reported a “sloppy” or “imprecise” steering sensation that requires replacement of the steering rack.
Verdict
No major or systematic issues related to the M’s drivetrain were apparent — and most known issues should be easy to diagnose and repair.
Consider a used M35 and M45 alongside models like the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6.
