Injured welder said to be stable

The 24-year-old man seriously hurt in an industrial accident on Wednesday is in stable condition in hospital, according to his employer.

“We understand our employee’s condition is stable after surgery overnight,” Steve Ross, general manager of Cherubini Metal Works, said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Kevin Finch with the Department of Labour said the worker was welding a 22-tonne piece of metal at the Cherubini Metal Works shop on Pleasant Street in Dartmouth when the supporting jigs gave way. The worker’s right arm was severely injured.

The incident happened just at about 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Finch said they issued a stop-work order on the jigs in the shop until they are deemed safe in an inspection. The shop was also requested to provide a number of documents and inspection reports to the provincial department.

Ross said the company is doing their own forensic review of the accident. The area is currently under quarantine for the investigation.

“Our company wants to get to the bottom of what happened (Wednesday) to help us do whatever it takes to protect the safety of all our workers,” Ross said.
