The riot started about 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, and ended four hours later with prisoners either being put back in their cells or arrested by police.
RCMP said it’s not known what caused the uprising of 30 inmates at the prison, which houses about 420 prisoners.
Some of the inmates took other inmates hostage and two small fires were started, CBC News Online reports.
Officers from Mission RCMP and Coquitlam RCMP came to quell the uprising as well as help the community with the day's calls for service.
The prisoners were contained to two units when a tactical decision was made to utilize the Emergency Response Team.
Both the RCMP and correctional centre officials will be investigating the cause of the disturbance.
