Inspired by Obama, stunned by lotto win

Sean and Joni Mayer won’t be forgetting Jan. 20, 2009.

It was a day of inspiration and hope for the Washington State couple as they listened to their new leader, Barack Obama, speak eloquently of his vision for the future.

It was also a day of immediate prosperity for the Mayers, as they collected a cheque for almost $7.5 million from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. at its Toronto office for Lotto
6-49’s Jan. 3 draw.

“It’s a day that we’ll remember,” Joni said.

Sean, a director of construction for a U.S. company, called it “a day of milestones.”

“We’re very excited,” Joni said of the inauguration and their windfall. “There’s new hope in the world now.”

While Obama inspired them, their lottery cheque left them a little stunned.

With more than $5 million left after paying U.S. taxes, the couple should be able to invest that and retire on the interest, Joni said.

Sean said he’s not planning anything drastic now.

“I’m not making any immediate decisions,” he said.
