International Avenue plan up for approval

It’s not the railroad that was promised over 100 years ago, but it’s close.

The Southeast 17 Corridor Land use and Urban Design Concept Plan goes to city council today for approval. The plan features a multi-modal boulevard with a ground level LRT/BRT line running up International Avenue.

“A lot of positive things have already been done, but this will make it one of the best communities in the city,” said Alison Karim-McSwiney, executive director of International Avenue. “We’re pushing for the timing of (the LRT) as fast as possible. The infrastructure is really overdue for a redesign.”

The richness of diversity of International Avenue means it can transform into a unique and special area, said Ald. Bob Hawkesworth.

“It’s just waiting to come into its own as one of Calgary’s coolest redeveloped areas,” he said.
