International kids’ fest set to celebrate 29th year June 1-5

The International Children’s Festival director was proud to announce the program list Thursday for the upcoming event in St. Albert this June.

Many gathered at the Arden Theatre in St. Albert on Thursday to hear Festival Director Nancy Abrahamson unveil the program for the 29th Annual International Children’s Festival running from June 1-5, 2010.

On hand were St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse and the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, Lindsay Blackett.

“It’s really important for us to create an environment that all families can come down and create new special memories with their kids and appreciate the different cultures from all around the world,” Abrahamson said.

This environment will consist of a variety of programs, hands-on crafts and musical concerts. That includes performing acts from different countries, such as Belgium, Taiwan and Scotland.

“Each year this festival has continued to amaze me with it’s excitement, energy and incredible people,” Abrahamson said. “I’ve been lucky to see how this great festival has grown. We’ve seen our volunteer force expand to 700 strong, the site activities triple and the number of people who take part explode from 20,000 to over 55,000.”

This festival is one of many that take place every year across North America. These festivals share resources and the cost of some of the visiting performing companies.

The cost of the festival in St. Albert is estimated at over $240,000 to host a day. But due to government and business sponsoring, ticket prices are at a reduced cost of $10 or less for children or adults.

Tickets are available Friday at the Arden Theatre Box Office, Ticketmaster or Ticketmaster Charge-by-phone.
