International student drowns in Squamish-area lake

An international student from China taken to hospital after being found unconscious at Alice Lake has died, RCMP said Sunday.

The teen was on a field trip to the lake near Squamish with Bodwell High School classmates. On Saturday, around 2:30 p.m., he began to experience some difficulties in the water, according to RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

The student was later found unconscious after nearly drowning and was then airlifted to B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Ritchie said that the teen’s mother, who was visiting her son, was with him when he passed away just after midnight.

His death is being investigated by the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

Administrators from the high school are in a meeting and were unavailable for comment Sunday afternoon.
