Investigators probe suspected jail cell suicide

Officers from the Surete du Quebec’s homicide unit in Montreal have been called in to investigate the death of a 34-year-old man who appears to have hanged himself him in a Gatineau police detention cell on Monday.

Yohan Cossette of Gatineau was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead, after he was discovered hanging in the cell around 3:45 a.m.

Cossette had been arrested an hour earlier for breach of conditions related to a prior criminal charge.

Police do not suspect foul play.

“It looks like voluntary gesture,” said officer Steve Lalande.

The Ministry of Public Security ordered an independent investigation into the incident, which is being conducted by the Surete du Quebec.

An autopsy will be performed in the next few days.
