IWK further tightens visitation amid H1N1 outbreak

The IWK Health Centre has further toughened its visitation access in the wake of the H1N1 outbreak.

Starting yesterday, only two visitors are now allowed per patient at the hospital, and according to an IWK release issued, “those two visitors should be the same two pre-identified people as long as this restriction remains in place.”

As well, children under 12 are restricted from visiting except for “compassionate reasons” and anyone with flu-like symptoms shouldn’t visit patients at all.

Last Friday, the IWK announced only immediate family as defined by the patient were allowed to visit those in hospital.

The release said these temporary restrictions are required to protect patients, “many of whom are at high risk of complications from the H1N1 flu virus.”

The release also said families coming to the IWK Emergency Department are being asked to limit the number of people accompanying their children. It was also announced that labour and delivery classes, along with birth pre-admission clinic sessions, have been cancelled until further notice.
