Jackson’s message is learned at home: we day founder

Civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. will be speaking to Vancouver’s We Day crowd on Friday. Metro asked We Day co-founder Craig Kielburger how youth can connect to Jackson’s message of compassion and equality.

How do you instill these values in young kids who aren’t exposed to diversity at home or in their community?

Instilling values related to social justice starts at home. When my brother Marc and I were young, our dad used to spread the newspaper out on the kitchen table and call us over to read the headlines. Together we’d talk about the issues — everything from drought in Ethiopia to the closure of the local library.

Then, at the end of each page, he’d ask how we could get involved. We left the kitchen table armed with the knowledge of what was going on in the world.
