Some daydream about seeing their bosses or co-workers being taken away in handcuffs, and yesterday, the dream may have come true.
The 20th annual Canadian Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail took 33 of Edmonton’s upstanding citizens down to the mock jail at Commerce Place and placed them in front of the “judge” to raise money for a worthy cause.
“(The jailbirds) are happy to be here because it is for a good cause,” said Christy Parker, manager of campaigns and events for the Canadian Cancer Society.
These jailbirds are given a phone and computers in order to contact co-workers, friends and family to raise “bail,” with donations going towards the Canadian Cancer Society.
Once bail has been made, prisoners may return to work.
“People are pretty happy to stay in for a while, actually,” said Parker.
For Mike Wieninger, operations manager with PCL Construction, one of the Jail-N-Bail’s major sponsors, it was a bit of an ironic morning.
“We actually built the jail that I am now housed in,” said Wieninger.
Wieninger was charged with not being an Edmonton Oilers fan by his co-workers and his bail was set at $3,000.
“Retribution will be ever so enjoyable,” said Wieninger, warning those who put him behind bars.
By the end of the day, these jailbirds raised about $55,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
