The Edmonton Eskimos announced yesterday that coveted free-agent running back Jesse Lumsden has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option.

Widely considered one of the CFL’s top young stars and a premier Canadian running back, the Edmonton-born Lumsden played his first four pro seasons with Hamilton.

“Jesse Lumsden is the complete package — he’s got the ability to run tackle to tackle with power and challenge you with his speed and strength,” said Eskimo general manager and director of football operations Danny Maciocia. “We expect he’ll make a big impact on our offence.”

“I’m very excited to join a team with a winning tradition,” Lumsden said. “As a young boy I spent a lot of time in the Eskimo dressing room and it’s great to return to play (here).” Lumsden’s father, Neil, played for the Esks from 1980 to 1985.

Lumsden, 26, who attended NFL training camps with the Seahawks in 2005 and Redskins in 2006, was forced to shut it down early in his last two years with Hamilton due to season-ending shoulder surgery.
