Job fair aims to help youth left battered by ailing economy

Be it a summer job or the beginning of a career, young people have also been affected by our job-shedding economy.

In an attempt to help youth out on the job front, young people were lining up at a Thursday job fair in Stampede, which was at capacity within minutes.

“We have seventy-five employers all on site looking to hire young people for job opportunities, there’s over five thousand jobs available today,” said Lisa Wieser with the Calgary Youth Employment Centre.

Young people aged 15-24 handed out resumes and checked out potential jobs in fields from banking to the armed forces. Nationally, youth unemployment is at its highest rate in 11 years, with an 10.8 per cent rate in Alberta as of March — almost a four point increase over last year.
