Canadian Olympian Jon Montgomery, who won men’s gold for skeleton in the 2010 Olympics, is in town with Canada’s best skeleton and bobsleigh athletes to kick off the FIBT World Cup.

How have the last few months been for you?

“It’s been absolutely incredible. We’ve been busy as a one-armed paperhanger. We’ve been everywhere from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Comox the next day, and everywhere in between. Hong Kong, Uganda, Amsterdam, Edinburgh. We’ve been everywhere.”

How did it feel to go from relative obscurity to Canada-wide fame?

“It’s been incredibly rewarding and challenging. Although you’d love to be able to help everybody, you simply can’t stretch yourself too thin.”

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming months?

“Having some semblance of a schedule and a little downtime to really focus on being an athlete. I’m looking forward to travelling with my friends, skeleton sliding everyday, and training at the gym and getting ready for world champs in Germany.”

I love how you consider that “down time.”

“Yeah. Tomorrow we’ll be back to business and sliding and focusing on getting faster everytime we go down the track.”
