Juno winner Valdy to play Nisku Sunday

Blackjacks Roadhouse is the venue for folk music before the big festival comes to town, and two well-known acts are coming to the venue in Nisku July 25 and Aug. 6.

“We’ve got some good gigs coming through here with Valdy and then Fred Eaglesmith on Aug. 6 for all the Fred Heads,” said Blackjacks owner Clarence Shields.

“You look at Valdy and his achievements; 12 albums … he’s got all sorts of awards.
“This guy is a pretty good entertainer.

“And Fred Eaglesmith, he just finished playing on David Letterman a week-and-a-half ago. He’s a little different so he’s going to be fun.”

Blackjacks is one of the few facilities around Edmonton that is licensed for more than 500 people, according to Shields.

His hope is that will continue to attract some of the big names in the music business.

“We’re finding ourselves becoming a staging area for touring groups,” he said.

“We’ve got local as well as major Canadian acts.”

The venue owner said however, his ultimate goal is to promote Canadian talent.
