Kamloops bishop viciously beaten

A bishop was in hospital in serious condition yesterday after being beaten in what police call a “brutal attack” in a Kamloops cathedral.

Bishop David Monroe, 69, was found bleeding in the rectory at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday night along with another priest who dislocated his shoulder trying to fend off their attacker.

“(Monroe) has suffered severe trauma to the face and head,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk. “(He) also sustained bruises and lacerations to other parts of his body as a result of the brutal attack.”

Police say it appears the suspect, a 30-year-old man, forced his way into the cathedral after fleeing from Royal Inland Hospital, where his family had taken him for a mental health assessment.

Officers found the suspect at around 1 a.m. inside a shed at a nearby trailer park.
