Kate, balloon boy among top costume sales

Spend five minutes on Entertainment Tonight or People Magazine’s websites and you’ll get a good sense of what Vancouverites are dressing up as this Halloween.

“Ladies are asking for a Kate Gosselin wig,” said Marcela Stancu, marketing director for The Party Bazaar.

Stancu said somebody called looking for help putting together an H1N1 costume, and another shopper wanted to go as a BlackBerry.

Balloon boy costumes are selling out online, with kits including a Mylar balloon paired with a cardboard box as a mockery of — or homage to — six-year-old Falcon Heene.

“Usually (recent) movies influence people’s costumes (too),” said Stancu, adding that Jack Sparrow and the Joker costumes are still selling out.

At the Value Village in Burnaby, shoppers are especially interested in Transformers and Alice in Wonderland costumes, said store manager Stephen Yuen. There will also likely be a lot of Michael Jackson sightings on Saturday — Stancu and Yuen say the pop icon is one of the most popular costumes this year.
