Kevin Costner coming to Country Rockfest

Country music fans, let me hear yah say yee-haw.

Alan Jackson, Johnny Reid, Lonestar, George Canyon and Kevin Costner — yes, the actor — are some of the performers scheduled to take the stage next summer as part of Country Rockfest 2010, which will be held Aug. 6 and 7 at the Halifax Common.

The two-day festival is promoted by Power Promotional Events Inc. and will be the latest outdoor concert held at the popular downtown Halifax greenspace.

“It’s going to be a great weekend,” promoter Harold MacKay said at a press conference announcing the event Thursday. He added capacity for the concert will be 40,000, with tickets going on sale Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Without question, Jackson is the highlight of this star-filled musical lineup. The multiple Country Music Award winner has enjoyed numerous No. 1 hits and, in 2006, headlined a country music show with Brooks and Dunn at Magnetic Hill in Moncton, which drew more than 40,000 fans.

Jackson will headline the show on Aug. 7. That concert includes Costner, who is looking to make a name for himself in country music as the lead to the band Modern West.

“He’s really trying to get exposure,” said MacKay, adding Costner has asked to perform a 90-minute set in Halifax. “He really wants to make a career of this.”

MacKay said the stage for the concert is moving back to the northwest part of the Common where it was located for both the Rolling Stones and Keith Urban.
