Key Liberal staffer killed in collision

A senior federal Liberal party staff member is dead after a motorcycle collision in Hintonburg Thursday morning.

Mario Laguë, 52, director of communication for Liberal party Leader Michael Ignatieff, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the side of an SUV at the intersection of Scott Street and Parkdale Avenue around 7 a.m.

A witness to the collision reported that paramedics responding to the call worked desperately to save Laguë. But after he was loaded into the ambulance, the vehicle sat there for several minutes before driving away without lights, he said.

Laguë was married with two children. During his career, he had served as a senior public servant under prime ministers Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin and as ambassador to Costa Rica.

“Mario was a beloved member of our staff,” said Ignatieff.
