Kick your ‘treasures’ to the curb

If you love free stuff, get ready to cruise the streets of HRM for some finds.

The municipality is promoting a Curbside Give Away Weekend on June 5 to 6.

“We’re encouraging people to take their reusable items and place them curbside and we’re asking them to place a sign on it that says they’re free,” said Shannon Betts with HRM’s Solid Waste Resources department.

The free sign ensures people aren’t taking things that aren’t intended to be picked up, she added.

“You can leave items out there for the course of the weekend and if anything is not picked up by Sunday evening bring it back in.”

At that point, Betts said she hopes people will donate those items to charities.

It’s the first such event in the HRM but it’s an idea that comes from similar successful activities in Winnipeg and Ottawa.

The goal is to divert some of these “treasures” from landfills.

“Sometimes people, if they’re finished with it, they put it in the garbage and it doesn’t get a chance to be reused. We’re hoping this will help extend the life of some of those reusable items.”

Examples of the reusable items she’s talking about include: Books, furniture, appliances, sporting equipment, patio chairs, and clothing.
