They may be young, but your kids can still share in your favourite New Year’s tradition — making healthy resolutions.

The trick is to encourage them to set goals that are age-appropriate, easy to remember, and with realistic timelines.

1. Help your child come up with a few health-oriented goals to achieve each week. For example, “This week I will: try one new healthy food, play a new sport or physical activity, eat one extra serving of vegetables a day...”

2. Have your child write their healthy-living goals down and post them on the fridge. That way your child is reminded to make a healthy choice when he or she reaches for a snack.

3. Think about giving them mini rewards as they work to reach their goals. Treats like a new book or some extra time playing outside will let them know that you’re proud of their progress.
