It looks like the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas from needy kids in Whitby has only managed to bring out the generous spirit in everyone else.

Help has been pouring in since burglars broke into the Hunter’s Horn Pub last week to carry off a donations jug holding $7,000 to $8,000 for a Yule party on the premises for 32 local children on the Salvation Army’s invitation list.

"We’ve had lots of individuals donate gifts," said pub kitchen manager Michael Valdal. "We’re up to about the $8,000 to $10,000 mark. Regulars have taken up pools at work and collected money from their hockey teams to help out."

Pub customers had been kicking into the fund for several months to finance the second annual event hosted by owners Cindy Bawdick and her husband Thomas Picco. Sobey’s is supplying the turkeys for the dinner and the Retirees Association of Ontario Police is contributing a bike for each child attending.
