Kids team hits big time

One Calgary youth hockey team took a shot at a contest and won big time.

The 19 boys on the Midnapore Peewee 2 Rangers team won a draw with the Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids contest that gives them the opportunity to announce this Saturday’s Hockey Night in Canada game.

“(They’re) not really a big team in stature, but they play with a lot of heart and determination,” said head coach Brad Askin.

Although only 10 of the boys, ranging in age from 11 to 13, will have a special speech and say a special thank you to Scotiabank for the opportunity, all 19 will announce their names and be seen on national television before the game.

“It’s a fun opportunity to get the show rolling on Hockey Night in Canada,” said team member Aaron Bender, 11.

His teammate, Brydon Devine, 12, who said he and his friends were all very excited about the opportunity, added, “I’ll remember this for a really long time.”

The team was one of 25 minor hockey league teams chosen from across Canada to announce different games. They were initially supposed to announce a Calgary Flames game, but when that fell through they instead had the chance to announce the game on Jan. 10.
