Kids’ weekend at GreekFest

This weekend, GreekFest is geared towards children.

This Saturday features a children’s carnival, a visit from fire department mascot Sparky, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario bear and performances from local children’s folk dancing groups.

“People can see our own Odyssey dance group,” said Vasilios (Bill) Sioulas, one of the 350 volunteers. “Odyssey is a lead Ottawa performing group who recently performed in Northern Greece.”

The festival has a unique idea to raise money for CHEO.

“Every night we bring out this huge barrel and have ‘Breaking Plates For CHEO,’” he said.

“For $2 you smash a plate in front of everybody. That has been very successful — we’ve had lineups of people buying 10 to 20 plates at a time and letting out some stress.”
