A man convicted several months after a woman was shot and wounded on an Alberta reserve has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Clinton Roy Green, who is 20, was sentenced Tuesday after being found guilty earlier this month of aggravated assault.

Green was given 18 months credit for time already spent in pre-trial custody.

He
was arrested after a 22-year-old woman was left in life-threatening
condition following the April 2010 shooting at a home in the Samson
Cree First Nation townsite.

RCMP said at the time that Green was a known gang member.

Mounties say they hope the sentence will help deter similar violence in the community.
