Josh Hunt’s bereaved parents say the decision not to appeal his killer’s acquittal is like watching their son lay motionless in a hospital bed all over again.
“It’s very, very difficult,” said Gary Hunt. “It’s like Josh died again, to us.”
Following a thorough review of the Dec. 17 decision, the Crown decided it would not appeal the ruling that determined a then-teenage boy killed the 16-year-old Hunt in self-defence.
In a written decision, Justice Terry Clackson stated that the accused, who cannot be named, lawfully used the knife against Hunt, to “prevent an assault or the repetition of it.” Hunt and another teen were in an altercation with the accused in the accused’s home, following a party on Oct. 14, 2006.
Though Gary and Patricia Hunt wrote a letter to Premier Ed Stelmach and pleaded with the Crown to appeal, the decision will stand.
“We’re very shocked. It’s a sad day, not just for us, but for all Canadians,” Gary Hunt said, expressing his disappointment in the justice system.
