Leads heating up in cold case

New life could soon be breathed into a case gone cold, police officials said yesterday, with leads getting warmer to the killer of a 23-year-old man shot in the dead of winter.

Mitchell Chambers was killed while he sat in his running truck on Dec. 7 in front of a home at 4703 – 188 St. Though he was targeted, he wasn’t slain by gangsters, or over drugs.

“He was an innocent person of unfortunate circumstances,” Staff Sgt. Bill Spinks said yesterday.

“Though we believe he was the intended person.”

Investigators have narrowed their search for a killer down to one suspect, but don’t have enough evidence for an arrest. They’re hoping those with unrevealed information about the case will come forward as does the victim’s family.

“This crime was a senseless act of violence and we hope that the person responsible is brought to justice,” the victim’s cousin, Jennifer Warren, said.

Police are using the lack of recent murders to their advantage, by taking time to crack open cold cases, Spinks added.
