Lemonade good for heart

Amanda’s Lemonade Stand is no ordinary side-of-the road, spontaneous way of killing an hour or two on a hot day.

Eleven-and-three-quarters-year-old, Amanda Belzowski has been working hard to ensure that her citrusy beverages will help ring in a multitude of cash for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario’s annual bike-riding fundraiser, the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart.

Belzowski’s younger brother, Joshua, 3, will join in on her annual fundraiser as the face of Joshua’s Cookie Counter — a side table featuring sugary treats. Pizza and other foods will also be available.

Belzowski and parents Lisa and Dan arranged entertainment, a silent auction and local celebrity appearances.

Belzowski successfully solicited donations from businesses such as Metro, Dippin’ Dots, Richtree Market and the Toronto Maple Leafs and Argonauts. Donald Trump, Larry King, gymnast Lance Ringnald and the National Ballet of Canada have also chipped in.

One of the most exciting packages available in the silent auction was donated by magician David Copperfield. Tickets and airfare to his Las Vegas show, a suite at the MGM Grand Hotel and a tour of the magician’s warehouse by Copperfield himself are just some of the perks in the package he supplied.
Those who can’t make it Sunday can buy a “virtual glass” of lemonade any time between now and June 7 —the day of the bike ride — at lemonade4heart.org. Prices for both virtual and tangible refreshments are a “pay-what-you-can” donation.

To date, Amanda’s Lemonade Stand has raised more than $100,000.
