Less is more at OnePark West

Texture takes over from colour at OnePark West to create a look that entices.

The three-bedroom model townhome unit at the downtown-east development shows off how a modern space can really pop without resorting to flashy colours and contrasts.

Sarah Nelson, senior project designer with The Daniels Corporation, says the goal of the suite was to create an urban modern look that avoids feeling too cold or trendy.

“We wanted to create a modern and urban space that wasn’t too sterile or stark. A neutral palette really allows people to come into the space and not be distracted by sharp contrasts. We kept the lines quite simple, with more of a classic shape — I feel it creates an inviting space,” Nelson said.

Porcelain tile flooring in a light grey tone helps to soften the contrast between the white thermafoil cabinetry and darker elements in the kitchen while in the bedrooms a tiny dash of colour helps to keep the tone playfully elegant.

Textures become the focal point in the suite as Nelson used a wealth of varied surfaces and fabrics to create a satisfying sense of tactile discovery throughout the suite. Chenille, wool and cotton in furniture, carpeting and bedding mix with silk drapes and pillows to offer a pleasing mix of materials that also help to highlight the suite’s sleeker stone and wood elements.

“The textures tend to be coming from really usable, liveable fabrics. When you have that variety in textures, things that have more of a sheen do tend to pop out more and it’s nice to blend all those materials because it really adds a lot of dimension to the space,” Nelson said.

Overall, Nelson took a less-is-more approach that was as economical with accessories and colours as possible so as not to dominate the look of any part of the suite.

“The goal was to avoid cluttering the space by adding too many things that detract from our focal points. We wanted to create a mood that was quite relaxed without using too much colour to take away from that calming feel and to let the features in the room stand out more,” Nelson said.
