Letter with white powder shuts down legislature

Hazmat crews were called to the legislature Wednesday morning after a Health Ministry staffer opened up a letter that contained a suspicious-looking white powder.

And once the powder was tested sometime around 10:30 a.m., fire officials confirmed the substance was coffee whitener.

Students visiting the legislature on field trips were told to stay out while hazmat crews were busy carrying items outside the west wing.

John Tuckwell, a spokesman with Alberta Health and Wellness, says Health Minister Ron Liepert was on his way back from Medicine Hat when the letter was opened.

“That is so unfair,” said Alberta Liberal MLA Laurie Blakeman. “If you actually want to target the minister, don’t make their staff miserable.”
