Ottawa. As a young woman living in Ottawa Centre, I was personally insulted by the comments made by Helen Friel (Ottawa-Centre Conservative candidate Damian Konstantinakos’ campaign office manager), in which she suggested that women dislike Stephen Harper simply because we don’t find him “charming.”

It is exactly this patronizing mentality demonstrated by the Conservative party that deters women such as myself from supporting them.

I feel that Friel’s comments imply that women lack the capacity to make rational informed decisions, a stereotype that women have been fighting for years — a fight that has perhaps become more difficult since the Harper government cut funding for women’s advocacy by 43 per cent.

Other cuts have included the closing of 12 out of 16 Status of Women offices, and the scrapping of our progressive Court Challenges program.

Yeah, I guess we don’t find those things “charming.”
