Liberal justice critic Michel Samson is calling on the Public Accounts Committee to investigate the practice of turning away prisoners on weekends because of overcrowding at the Central Nova Correctional Facility in Burnside.

Samson wants the committee to request the appearance of Sean Kelly, the province’s director of correctional services, and Deputy Justice Minister Marian Tyson. The next scheduled meeting is today.

“The entire issue needs to be examined now,” Samson says in a release.

Kelly told the CBC this month an estimated 15 inmates are turned away each week but are under house arrest at home.
