Library gets funds to stay online

Libraries across Nova Scotia have been told they will continue toreceive the funding that pays for public Internet access next fiscalyear.

Libraries across Nova Scotia have been told they will continue to receive the funding that pays for public Internet access next fiscal year.

The news came from provincial librarian Jennifer Evans, who in November had informed regional librarians the Nova Scotia Provincial Library, which comes under the budget of the provincial Education Department, may not be able to cover the $300,000 costs for the EDnet Internet access for the province’s public libraries beyond this fiscal year.

Regional librarian Faye MacDougall was relieved to hear the Cape Breton Regional Library will be receiving the $41,904 to cover the costs of public Internet service at its 13 branches.

“We are very pleased to hear that,” she said yesterday. “We are struggling to meet demand for service, so it is a relief to know we are not going to have to cover these costs.”
