In most cities, people don’t consider a trip to the library potentially dangerous.

Edmonton Public Library responded to recent safety concerns about the downtown library location across the street from Churchill Square yesterday.

Problems have plagued this location in the past. Most recently, Shari Noname, 24, was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon after allegedly stabbing a 14-year-old girl in the neck outside the library when she refused to give Noname a cigarette.

“We don’t believe that this is strictly a library issue,” said Linda Cook, CEO of the Edmonton Public Library. “This is a civic issue that affects the entire square.”

Cook said that incidents inside the library have decreased by almost 50 per cent in 2009, and declined by 78 per cent in the first quarter of 2010. Cook will be meeting with the mayor, the chief of police, and the city manager on Friday morning to discuss this issue.
