Local design takes centre stage at B.C. Fashion Week

Nine creations by local design students and recent graduates will be featured during B.C. Fashion Week Spring 2010, which launches on Sunday.

The event, which will focus on the Business of Fashion, will showcase two types of collections, Ready to Wear and Diffusion (a line between ready-to-wear and trousseau/couture.

Chez Noel, executive director, said this year it’s all about balance: “It’s about showing the world that we can show Canadian designers alongside European and American designers.”

Organizers also invited young design student and graduates to take part.

JC Studio designer, RozeMerie Cuevas, said presenting during B.C. Fashion Week will be a nice boost for the young designers.

“The Youth in Fashion show will be a fantastic opportunity to show the young designers how the real world works — it’s chaotic and exciting,” she said.

Krista Brown, contributing designer for the Youth in Fashion said, “everyone is really excited.”

After Sunday’s opening gala, there B.C. Fashion Week will host daily shows at the Chinese Cultural Centre until Oct. 3. Youth in Fashion is on Thursday, offsite at the Circa Lounge on Granville Street.
