Local filmmaker set to screen in Cannes

A Vancouver filmmaker — who currently works as a bartender — is screening her 10-minute movie at the Short Film Corner during the Festival de Cannes in France.

Danielle Cousineau will be leaving North America for the first time to be a part of the 10-day long event that starts on May 12. The Vancouver Film School graduate wrote and directed the short film using local talent she found on Craigslist as her cast and crew.

“They were all incredibly talented … I would work with any of them in a heartbeat again.”

Cousineau became interested in art as a child because a heart condition kept her away from sports.

Her film, Tell Me, tells the story of a troubled prostitute. Cousineau said she’s hoping this festival will be a “sweet step through the door” to more success.

Cousineau said friends and co-workers at G Sports Bar and Grill on Granville Street have helped raised approximately half the funds she needs to afford the $6,000 two-week stint in Europe.
