Labor Day is a holiday not usually accompanied by gifts, but thousands of straphangers in Manhattan will be getting one anyway as the Cathedral Parkway – 110th Street BC subway station reopens for service this weekend.
Southbound service will resume on Sunday, with service in both directions officially returning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, just in time for you to return to work after the forthcoming long holiday weekend.
The 110th Street station closed in April for infrastructure repairs and other enhancements that required complete demolition and reconstruction. The work that has been done over the course of the past few months includes repairing the station’s corroded and rusted structural steel and platform concrete and replacing the platform edges, stair treads and wall tiles, the MTA said.
New railings, digital signs, improved wayfinding, a new, brighter turnstile area and security features have also been added to the station.
Additionally, MTA Arts & Design also expanded “Migration,” the 110th Street station’s existing glass mosaic artwork that celebrates its location in Frederick Douglass Circle. Created by New York native Chris Wynter, “Migration” was originally installed in the station in 1999.
“We’re thrilled to be returning this station to the community in better condition than it’s been in for decades, with critical structural repairs performed and brand-new features that will make planning and taking trips with us easier and more convenient than ever,” NYC Transit President Andy Byford said in a statement.
The 110th Street subway station is used by more than 7,500 straphangers each weekday, the MTA said. The station first opened in September 1932. 110th Street is also known as Cathedral Parkway due to the close proximity of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.
